It focuses on the evaluation of intermediate care services. Previous work has dealt with a conceptual framework to clarify understanding of intermediate care, and with issues of implementation. In the last year, interest in intermediate care has made an exponential leap; however, in many cases, implementation has taken place without pre-testing or with an absence of hard evidence that the new service will work. This report is the product of an invited seminar convened by the King's Fund to discuss strategies for evaluation of intermediate care and to compare participants' experience with different approaches, evaluation designs and measures. The report raises and discusses general comments about evaluation, and particular issues about evaluation of intermediate care per se. It then tackles the specifics of process, implementation, outcome and economic evaluation. A discussion follows, of how and when to bring these forms of evaluation together, to create a coherent picture. Finally, a series of appendices are presented, including an annotated inventory of pre-validated assessment tools, a glossary of terms, recommended reading, and a list of those attending the Recommendations focus on methods of good practice, ways of ensuring consistency and bringing the rest up to the standard of the best.  The main findings were that patients reported that information on what to expect and on the side-effects of treatment was often lacking and expressed a need for someone to listen and advise. Professionals acknowledged the value of teamwork and the contribution made by each member. Issues of concern to both patients, families and professionals were inpatient accommodation, internal communication and coordination of services and the acknowledgment of how much patients with head and neck cancer and their families go through. The proposed Calman changes were welcomed by people with cancer, their families and professionals, although professionals had reservations as to the implementation and effect on work patterns. Recommendations are given for purchasers, NHS trusts, head and neck cancer teams and patients and their families. The authors conclude that these projects assisted in giving consumer health information service workers a wider understanding of the issues around providing information on evidence-based health care and treatment outcomes, as well as providing further insight into the information needs of consumers.
