There is a growing expectation that this shift will be supported by the development of a network of new facilities in which primary, community and secondary care services are co-located, often referred to as polyclinics. Will this model improve the quality and accessibility of health care and deliver cost savings? Spending on mental health accounts for around ten per cent of the overall health budget and so the mental health sector has a key role in responding to this challenge. The King’s Fund and Centre for Mental Health, with the support of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the NHS Confederation’s Mental Health Network, have worked together to explore how mental health services could be delivered in a different and more cost-effective way. The consensus from their work, including an expert seminar and a review of evidence, is that there is scope for mental health services not only to improve their own productivity but also to support productivity improvements in other parts of the NHS. Mental health and the productivity challenge: Improving quality and value for money focuses on four main areas: immediate priorities for improving productivity in existing mental health services, what mental health services can offer to improve productivity in the NHS as a whole, the economic benefits beyond the NHS of improved mental health care, the longer-term challenge of building a preventive and empowering mental health system. The report suggests that there are real opportunities to change the way mental health services are delivered in order to achieve more within existing budgets. Of the improvement areas highlighted in the report, we consider that the following are the most promising targets for immediate attention: reducing unnecessary bed use in acute and secure psychiatric wards, establishing systems to review the use of highly expensive out-of-area treatments, improving workforce productivity, strengthening the interface between mental and physical health care, particularly for older people and people with long-term conditions. Many case studies and practical examples are included to illustrate these conclusions, and there are recommendations for action that involve everyone in the health service."],"date_published_tesim":["2010"],"date_published_ssi":"2010","official_url_tesim":["http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/mental-health-and-productivity-challenge"],"pagination_tesim":["64p."],"place_of_publication_tesim":["London"],"creator_tesim":["The King's Fund","Bell, Andy","Naylor, Chris","Centre for Mental Health"],"date_tesim":["2010"],"date_ssi":"2010","publisher_tesim":["The King's Fund"],"subject_tesim":["mental health services","preventive measures","quality improvement","patient admission","workforce","productivity","cost effectiveness","NHS"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/qv33rw698?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-managing","admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["qv33rw698"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["qv33rw698"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Published Work"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"nesting_collection__pathnames_ssim":["000096910"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":1,"_version_":1714885351830454272,"timestamp":"2021-10-28T17:28:35.622Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2021-10-27T23:32:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2021-10-28T15:18:17Z","has_model_ssim":["PublishedWork"],"id":"000116919","accessControl_ssim":["dbebcb60-9ce3-4775-998c-451ed77069e9"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["05741r698"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["05741r698"],"depositor_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"depositor_tesim":["batchuser@example.com"],"title_tesim":["Primary care co-commissioning : a survey of members’ views of their CCG and its role in primary care. A more fundamental transformation in service models will be needed, with a greater emphasis on prevention, shifting care upstream, better integration and co-ordination of care, and an ongoing focus on maximising value for patients."],"date_published_tesim":["2012"],"date_published_ssi":"2012","official_url_tesim":["http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/sustainable_health.html","https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/sites/default/files/field/field_publication_file/sustainable-health-social-care-appleby-naylor-mar2012.pdf"],"pagination_tesim":["28p."],"place_of_publication_tesim":["London"],"creator_tesim":["The King's Fund","Naylor, Chris","Appleby, John"],"date_tesim":["2012"],"date_ssi":"2012","publisher_tesim":["The King's Fund"],"subject_tesim":["pollution control","literature reviews","financing","innovations","environment","social care","health care","productivity","efficiency improvement","sustainability","NHS","preventive measures"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/1544bp09p?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-managing","admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["1544bp09p"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["1544bp09p"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Published Work"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"nesting_collection__pathnames_ssim":["000103293"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":1,"_version_":1714884504089264128,"timestamp":"2021-10-28T17:15:07.152Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2021-10-27T23:07:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2021-10-28T15:04:04Z","has_model_ssim":["PublishedWork"],"id":"000111974","accessControl_ssim":["a9f54bd3-1e4d-4ad9-a788-4273cf9cfa11"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["mk61rg937"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["mk61rg937"],"depositor_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"depositor_tesim":["batchuser@example.com"],"title_tesim":["Service transformation : lessons from mental health.
