Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive and disabling autoimmune condition that affects around 420,000 people in the United Kingdom. RA is associated with substantial health, social and economic costs, ranging from direct care such as joint replacement, to the indirect impact of shorter working lives. There is much potential to improve outcomes for people with RA through earlier identification and specialist treatment allied to better support for patient selfmanagement. However, there is a lack of understanding on the quality of RA care and the way in which recent changes in the health service have impacted on both patients and care professionals. A programme of work developed by The King's Fund, in partnership with the Burdett Trust for Nursing, has focused on the role of nurse executives in helping boards to assure themselves of the quality of clinical care. Based on observations at seven pilot sites, this report suggests there are valuable lessons to be learnt about the role and attributes of the nurse executive, but also lessons about the structure, processes and behaviours of boards. As leaders of the largest part of the NHS workforce, nurse executives have considerable power to influence the patient experience and the ability to provide an understanding of the standard of clinical care delivered by a trust. Building on the findings of From Ward to Board, the publication produced after the first phase of work in 2009, Putting quality first in the boardroom is based on observations of nurse executives and their boards at six NHS trusts. The report starts by examining what is meant by the term ‘clinical quality’ and why it has the potential to be marginalised in the boardroom. It goes on to consider the dynamics of the boardroom and the role of the nurse executive. \nThe main observations of the report relate to board members’ behaviour and attitudes to the question of discussing and improving clinical quality. To focus effectively on the business of caring, board members need to ensure that they have the time and training to develop their understanding of the issues around quality assurance and improvement. Nurse executives also need to move from their traditional role of ‘doing’ to one of enabling others. Successful nurse executives are skilled facilitators who know when to intervene; they have a key role in engaging frontline clinicians in the boardroom task of measuring and assuring the quality of care. In drawing together the findings, the authors suggest ten action points for boards to ensure that they engage more effectively with the quality agenda."],"date_published_tesim":["2010"],"date_published_ssi":"2010","official_url_tesim":["http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/document.rm?id=8665"],"pagination_tesim":["36p."],"place_of_publication_tesim":["London"],"creator_tesim":["Williams, Sally","Steward, Katy","Nath, Vijaya","The King's Fund","Gough, Pippa","Machell, Sue","Naylor, David"],"date_tesim":["2010"],"date_ssi":"2010","publisher_tesim":["The King's Fund"],"subject_tesim":["leadership","clinical directors","quality of patient care","management boards","boards of directors","clinical effectiveness"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/st74cq441?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-managing","admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["st74cq441"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["st74cq441"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Published Work"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"nesting_collection__pathnames_ssim":["000093966"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":1,"_version_":1714871770532544512,"timestamp":"2021-10-28T13:52:43.487Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Steward, Katy","hits":5,"label":"Steward, Katy"},{"value":"The King's Fund","hits":5,"label":"The King's Fund"},{"value":"Gough, Pippa","hits":2,"label":"Gough, Pippa"},{"value":"Machell, Sue","hits":2,"label":"Machell, Sue"},{"value":"Ashton, Beccy","hits":1,"label":"Ashton, Beccy"},{"value":"Burdett Trust for Nursing","hits":1,"label":"Burdett Trust for Nursing"}],"label":"Author"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"boards of directors","hits":2,"label":"boards of directors"},{"value":"leadership","hits":2,"label":"leadership"},{"value":"Board members","hits":1,"label":"Board members"},{"value":"Boards of directors","hits":1,"label":"Boards of directors"},{"value":"Care Quality Commission","hits":1,"label":"Care Quality Commission"},{"value":"Nhs trusts","hits":1,"label":"Nhs trusts"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[],"label":"Resource type"},{"name":"date_range_sim","items":[{"value":"2009","hits":2,"label":"2009"},{"value":"2010","hits":1,"label":"2010"},{"value":"2011","hits":1,"label":"2011"},{"value":"2014","hits":1,"label":"2014"}],"label":"Date Range"},{"name":"file_format_sim","items":[],"label":"File format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[],"label":"Collection"},{"name":"generic_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Work","hits":5,"label":"Work"}],"label":"Generic Type Sim"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":5,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
