This briefing builds on this by analysing newly-available data collected by the Department of Health on the amount PCTs in England spend on specific disease areas. It reveals that there are differences in spending per head that only appear to be partially explained by the different needs of their local populations, leaving unanswered questions about why PCTs reach different decisions about their spending priorities and whether spending variations have adverse effects on equity and efficiency."],"date_published_tesim":["2006"],"date_published_ssi":"2006","official_url_tesim":["http://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/local-variations-nhs-spending-priorities"],"pagination_tesim":["30"],"place_of_publication_tesim":["London"],"series_tesim":["Briefing paper"],"rights_statement_tesim":["http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"license_tesim":["http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"creator_tesim":["King's Fund"],"date_tesim":["2006"],"date_ssi":"2006","publisher_tesim":["King's Fund"],"resource_type_tesim":["Monograph"],"subject_tesim":["Cancer","Primary care trusts","Local communities","Financing","Coronary diseases","Nhs","Statistics","Mental health","Tabular data"],"note_tesim":["Pagination: 30p.; Includes 4 tables with data for primary care trusts. How do they decide on their spending priorities? This paper examines the data collected by the Department of Health on the amounts PCTs spend on the 23 programmes of care based on medical conditions such as mental health, circulatory problems (including heart disease) and cancer. It also looks at changes in overall PCT spending between 2004/5 and 2006/7 and examines where the extra cash allocated to the NHS went. Fundamental differences are shown in PCT spending that are only partially explained by the different needs of local populations.
