Many NHS researchers, managers and clinical leaders believe that increased integration within the health service will help to achieve this, and the government has made clear its ambitions that the health reforms should encourage integrated care. This paper addresses the fundamental question of whether competition and integration can co-exist and considers the role that different bodies, especially the NHS Commissioning Board and Monitor, will play within a new system. This project and the reports we are producing are intended to inform the national conversation about the past, present and future of the NHS.","This first, main report uses OECD data and a range of other public sources to compare the NHS to health systems in 18 similar developed countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the USA. It looks at three aspects of what we might mean by a good health care system: the speed and accessibility of care, the efficiency of the system, and the outcomes delivered for patients. It also sets the scene by looking at what the health service has to work with, so that we can consider whether it is doing a good job given the circumstances. The report finds that the NHS performs neither as well as its supporters sometimes claim nor as badly as its critics often allege. Compared with health systems in similar countries, it has some significant strengths but also some notable weaknesses."],"date_published_tesim":["2018"],"date_published_ssi":"2018","official_url_tesim":["https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/publications/nhs-70-how-good-is-the-nhs","https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/projects/NHS70/research-group"],"pagination_tesim":["49p."],"place_of_publication_tesim":["London"],"creator_tesim":["Kelly, Elaine","The King's Fund","Institute for Fiscal Studies","Ward, Deborah","Nuffield Trust","Dayan, Mark","Health Foundation","Gardner, Tim"],"date_tesim":["2018"],"date_ssi":"2018","publisher_tesim":["The King's Fund","Nuffield Trust","Health Foundation","IFS"],"subject_tesim":["access to health services","international comparisons","health outcomes","efficiency","health systems","NHS"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/w9505044z?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-managing","admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["w9505044z"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["w9505044z"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Published Work"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"nesting_collection__pathnames_ssim":["000130523"],"nesting_collection__deepest_nested_depth_isi":1,"_version_":1714880447267209216,"timestamp":"2021-10-28T16:10:38.266Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2021-10-27T21:30:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2021-10-28T14:06:04Z","has_model_ssim":["PublishedWork"],"id":"000131305","accessControl_ssim":["a8379a26-775c-466b-a2fc-9e8eb87c8068"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["0z708w40c"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["0z708w40c"],"depositor_ssim":["batchuser@example.com"],"depositor_tesim":["batchuser@example.com"],"title_tesim":["Impact of the Care Quality Commission on provider performance : room for improvement?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2021-10-27T21:30:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2021-10-28T13:39:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"biblionumber_tesim":["131305"],"abstract_tesim":["The CQC introduced a new approach to inspecting and rating health and social care providers in 2013.
