Abstract

At a conference on patient-nurse dependency the need emerged for a careful consideration of the wide range of approaches found to be in use, and some guidance to nurses, management, and research workers on the next step in this field of activity. This booklet describes the background work leading to the creation of dependency systems and looks at their various uses including the derivation of workload measures. It then shows in detail how to use two simple methods to collect the necessary dependency information and how to calculate the work load
