Abstract
  • The King's Fund Mental Health Inquiry 2002/3 revisits many of the issues covered in its previous inquiry of 1997. This identified several areas of concern about the mental health workforce, specifically: a crisis in recruitment and retention of mental health professionals of all disciplines in London; among primary care staff, a lack of skills to effectively manage mental health problems; and high levels of organisational and job instability and poor cross-agency working. The reasons for some of the difficulties identified were not understood at the time. This working paper explores workforce issues in greater depth, to throw light on the challenges currently facing the mental health sector. [Executive summary]
